Frugal Fashionista - Dare to be Different

It's been so fun to do this Frugal Fashionista feature and read all of your comments and emails.
I do believe I might have a few of you doubters pondering this designer duds on a dime option.
If you're new to these posts, please click on the Frugal Fashionista side bar button to read the first three installments. They will give you the background of why I shop thrift, some of the hesitations with second hand shopping, but mainly...all the great benefits. :)

I am veering away from the essential pieces of a core wardrobe, and sharing with you one of my highlights from buying thrift.
I love the opportunity to step out of my typical wardrobe comfort zone and wear things I would never have dared to wear if paying retail.
I would have considered myself a fairly classic dresser a few years ago. Give me a black dress and a great necklace, and I was good to go
(well, some things haven't changed...wait til you see my post on ALL of my little black dresses. :)
In fact, I bought my first pair of jeans only five years ago when I was with some girlfriends on a beach trip. Having been heavy in my early 20's, I could never find jeans that I felt comfortable in, and I never shed that "chubby" mentality that I had lived with as a single woman. It only took that one pair I tell you, now I'm converted. :)

Once I began feeling comfortable with who I was, and didn't worry so much about "what I looked like," I really started having fun trying new things.
My philosophy? If I don't like it, I can just pass it on. I only paid $1 - 5 for it.

Some of the ways that I have stepped out of my comfort zone.
  • I am wearing new colors.
I automatically navigate towards certain colors. Usually, they are colors within my "summer - cool" toned spectrum, but I have had a blast experimenting with both brighter or darker shades as well. I never envisioned that I could wear brown. This winter at Goodwill, I bought a brown turtleneck, accented my eyes with deeper brown shadow shades, wore brown lipstick (a first), and guess what...I got a bunch of complements....on brown. Who would have ever figured that? Now that summer is coming, I will enjoy some brighter colors, and I can't wait to show you another "out of my comfort" dresses in hot pink. It's supposed to be on the post, but technical difficulties happened.
  • I am trying new sizes.
Do you have a wardrobe of various sizes like me? I am slowly getting rid of my larger sizes, but I have kept quite a few...just in case... (I get pregnant...not gain back my weight...hee hee). With buying second hand clothes, you quickly realize that size means nothing. In the last month, I have bought a size 6 and a 12, and they both fit great.
At most thrift stores, they have a dressing room and I always take advantage of that. At yard sales, the prices are never over $1-2, so I take a chance by eyeballing the item.
  • I am dressing more trendy.
Believe it or not, I am dressing more "in style" than I ever did when I was buying retail. I can afford more items and I can experiment in new ways. I can be a bit more daring in designs, patterns, accessories, colors etc. Some women turn over their clothes frequently based on size, the season or a shopaholic syndrome. I have been their benefactor and they don't even know it.
So step out of your comfort zone a bit when shopping at these thrift stores and yard sales. Just because it's something "you'd never wear," doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a try. :)
Here's my prime example.
This dress I bought at Good Will months ago. It was brand new - Arden B - with a $98 price tag still hanging on it. I looked on their website and I am guessing it probably went on sale for $78. Still, I paid $5. It is an XL, which I am not, but I knew that because of the drawstring, I could make it as small as I wanted. This dress could be worn by someone many pounds heavier than me, so again, size is relative for this dress.
This has waited and waited and waited while I got brave enough to wear it to church.
What was I waiting for? I LOVE IT and my son even said I was stylin'.
Why was I hesitant? The pattern is bold (maybe, sort of hippie-ish), the stripes go sideways, and I thought maybe I was trying to dress too young for my age. Never again will I let those feeling deter me from trying something different and fun.
I had a blast with this on...it gave me an extra hop with those honking high heeled boots. :)

Although, truth be told, I did need to get past my total self consciousness when my 9 year old daughter looked at me as I put it on, and said, "Really, Mom, can you just put on a normal skirt or something?"
Yep, she said it, and I almost hung it back up for a few more months, but I persevered.
I wanted it to be a bit more modest. It was showing some cleavage (which many women love - not me), so I layered a brown tank underneath it.

I had just found these brown Chinese Laundry brand boots at a yard sale for $2. They have this great row of buttons up the side of the boot that you can't see.
I am not a high heel kind of gal. I just haven't figured out how to build up that muscle yet, but I can put up with anything for a few hours.
Anyone who wears boots like this struts...just a little...try it. :) Plus, I knew with summer coming, this would be one of the last times to wear my dark boots. And here is the official "I am a bird and I can fly" picture that my son took. I am attempting to show you just how cool these big sleeves are...somehow the affect has been lost on me.

So, remember - have fun with your clothes, whether they are from yard sales, or Sax Fifth Avenue.
Throw on a huge chunky necklace that is so "in", try a Julia Robert's "hat", accent with a scarf, buy a hippie looking dress and enjoy a lift from your designer doldrums. :)
At least one "out of your comfort zone" purchases will be so worth it.
Dare to be different!

(edited to add: I woke up to some great comments from ladies who initially thought, "Only Jen, can find such cute things." Read their stories of "hitting the jackpot." YEA!!

Freezer Meals...Mexican style for Tasty Tuesday

Welcome to Tasty Tuesday Parade of Foods...sharing the best in food fun throughout blogland. :)
Last month, I shared my ONE HOUR meal planning experiment.
As a work at home, home schooling mom of five, my days sometimes feel like a never ending roller coaster.
Thinking of the "What for dinner?" answer leaves me a bit light headed.
I have done many things over the years to "perfect" my Meal Time Mountain madness, but few things have been as beneficial as my one hour experiment.
The results? FIFTEEN meal options ready and waiting with only five minutes of prep time.

If you haven't read my Meal Planning with a Twist post first...start here or the rest of my post won't make a lot of sense. It will give you the background of how I was able to have 15 meal ideas ready to go with only a little over one hour of work. Seriously!

Since the last two weeks have been quite hectic in our home, I really got off track with meal preparations. I admit it...it happens to all of us. That is why I was grateful to have staples ready to go. The 5 o'clock dinner question was asked quite a few times, and frankly nothing was simmering...but within five minutes, their request was answered.

When I posted the ideas for the meal planning, many people needed the hard core recipes and wanted to know exactly what I did with what I had in the freezer. So here are the Mexican meals that I made...in five minutes of prep time.
I made enchiladas (both baked and cold) with the black beans, and rice/beef mixture. One week, I served them warm and made them up myself (as shown above).
The following week, I lined the burritos and toppings up buffet style and the kids could mix/match their own creation dolloping them with cheese, salsa, onions, pepper, lettuce, and sour cream (shown below).

One of my favorite meals of all times is the timeless taco salad. It's a joke when we go out to eat because I almost always order a taco salad (and a side of fries...it's a sickness, I know).
I was able to enjoy both beef taco salads and chicken taco salads in minutes since the meats were already cooked. I just needed to heat and go.

NOW FOR one of the VERY FIRST RECIPES I EVER MADE FOR MY HUSBAND!

This taco casserole was one of the very first meals I made for my husband when we were married. Much laughter comes with this memory.
I cooked this in a brand new bake ware set that I received as a wedding present. I felt so Blissfully Domestic. That set came with a plastic lid, and guess what I did....
Come on! If it comes with a lid, certainly I'm supposed to put the lid on the dish and bake, correct?
Sheesh...who knew?

The fire alarm in our apartment went off. The fire trucks came blaring. Everyone wanted to know what happened.
Yes, it was a proud Domestic goddess moment. And the true culprit?
My brand new beautifully melted plastic lid. How dare it destroy my gourmet creation.
And you can bet that my frugal nature tried to peel that plastic right off...I was NOT going to throw it away! hee hee

Sorry I don't have a picture of it in layers...just imagine.

Taco Casserole - this is a melt in your mouth beef casserole recipe that combines easy with Tex-Mex. This is delicious made before hand and then heated up.

Of course, I always double this recipe, and pray for left overs. :) As you perfect the recipe, you will make it your own. I added a layer of rice as a filler item which is always needed with my huge eaters. I vary this original recipe a bit now, but I am giving it to you the way I received it with my variations highlighted.

  • 1 pound ground beef (optional rice...my addition)
  • 1 small onion, chopped (peppers, tomatoes, and various shredded garden veggies in the summer time to make it a really healthy option)
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 envelope of taco seasoning (but I always use my Homemade Gourmet taco soup seasoning)
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 cup sour cream (light sour cream works perfectly)
  • 1 cup cottage cheese (have done it with all cottage cheese in a pinch)
  • 2 cups crushed tortilla chips (this is how I use up our crushed stale reminents in the pantry)
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) grated Monterey Jack cheese (or whatever you have on hand)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a skillet, brown the beef (oh yes, that was already done for me during my experiment), then drain off extra fat; remove from heat. Add onion, garlic powder, taco seasoning mix, and tomato sauce to beef; mix and set aside. In a medium sized bowl, combine sour cream and cottage cheese; set aside. Place half the crushed chips in the bottom of a 2 1/2 quart casserole dish that has been coated with a nonstick vegetable spray. Add enough meat mixture to cover the chips, then cover the meat with half of the sour cream mixture. Sprinkle with half the grated cheese. Repeat layers. Bake uncovered, for 30-35 minutes, until cheese melts and casserole is heated through.

This is just as good with ground turkey. It's so rich that it's almost as good as a hot dip.
This is frugal friendly as all of these items I get when they are deeply discounted.

Yes, we love Mexican and I can't wait to try some of those that have recently been linked for Tasty Tuesday.

Have your ever done Once a Month cooking or an easier version like I have just shown you? Trust me....try this one hour experiment and you'll be hooked!!
So what have you been making lately? Link away!
As always, please link directly to your post so we can find the recipe with ease, and then link back to Balancing Beauty and Bedlam or the Tasty Tuesday specific post.
Thanks for making this so much fun!!

Yard Sale Treasures...are they out there?

Waking up and going to yard sales is as natural to me as the air I breathe.
But for many of you, it's new and a bit overwhelming. My goal is to have a concise Yard Sale 101 summary, but I am going to begin in baby steps, and use what I purchased in one hour last week. The tutorial will come in detail. I am, after all, typing this while listening to the crashing waves at Myrtle Beach...baby steps. :)

So you have decided to give yard sale-ing a try, but have been intimidated as to where to start.
1. Buy your local newspaper the day before yard sale weekend or go to Craig's list and search for garage sales, yard sales etc. Depending on where you live, they have various names.
Learn the higher end neighborhoods, and zip codes. If you are just beginning, I recommend looking for neighborhood/subdivision sales. This is where anywhere from 5-55 homes will be selling their items.
2. Map out your plan of attack - seriously. Since I live in the country, I don't have the extra time or gas money to wander aimlessly. I have a "route" that I take most Saturday, which takes me about 15 miles from home. I look in the paper first to see which homes are advertised on that route, and then browse for any exceptional sales that will take me to a different section of town. If you are in the city, you can probably find many sales within a few blocks, but that's an exception.
3. You MUST go out early, and you must shop fast. Sleeping in isn't an option if you are looking for choice items.
"The early bird gets the worm" has never been truer than with yard sales. The quality items go fast, especially furniture. I attempt to get in 10 sales within the first hour. If you're at a neighborhood sale, then this number may be much higher. Now of course, if you hit the jack pot, then there's no reason to rush.
Now, don't fret if that alarm clock was accidentally set to P.M. instead of A.M. That happens to the best of us. There are still miscellaneous treasures to be found, and typically by the end of a yard sale day, owners are "giving" things away.
Do you remember my free spray paint from this post? Yes, it was at the end of a moving sale day and the owner gave me an entire box of spray paint, household cleaners, garbage bags and other misc. items for $1.
This weekend, a woman had twenty beautiful designer handbags/purses that she was selling for $3 a piece. They were going like hotcakes, and if you were not at her yard sale within the first hour, you would never have known the gems that she had. With that being said...
4. If you're deciding on whether or not you want to purchase something, do NOT put it down.
Ponder your purchase with it IN hand.
When I first asked how much her purses were, she said, "$4." In my frugal yard sale mentality of making a point, I just politely put down the purse I was coveting. :) She saw that and said, "well, I'll take $3." When I went to grab it, another woman had already claimed it.
AHHH....I know better. Novice mistake...it will not happen again.
So, I enjoyed my new Frugal Fashionista $3 red purse and $1 cool black shirt and tried to let go of the "one that got away." (But I was kicking myself the whole morning).

Wilson Leather purse that looks brand new - $1. I googled it and it sold for anwhere between $49-$69.
Great low length leather black boots - $1, like new.
5. Think outside of the box with purchases that typically end up being impulse buys.
My daughter's very first "friend" birthday party is coming up at the end of May.
Whenever I see new toys, stocking stuffers, or prize type items, I buy them all.
I bought all of these brand new items for $1.
Not showed: Hannah Montana lip glosses that have already been confiscated much to the chagrin of this mother.
I also do not pass up brand new jewelry. Whether for myself or others, these make great stocking stuffers.

6. No need to buy brand new childrens books again. Used books are at most yard sales. I have a target price of $0.25 - $0.50 per book. For those of you who home school, I hit the jack pot at a former home schooler's yard sale. I bought this entire box of various used curriculum for
mere dollars. Value of it new: $225.
7. Think repurposing when you find house decor or furniture. Don't let color stand in the way of your goal. If you've read my blog at all, you know that spray paint/paint transforms anything in minutes. I love the details on this mirror, but have no use for it "as is."

Painted white, it will be ideal in my shabby chic great room. The owner told me she wanted $10 for it. I asked her what she would take for it, and she said, "$5." It's sold.
I can't wait to use this white treasure as a centerpiece with some of my flowers. Again, thinking outside the box. It's more than a food serving dish, but I just loved this piece and splurged - $4.50. :)

I was thrilled to find this antique egg tray for $0.50. At our Easter gathering, I mentioned wanting one to display our eggs, not to mention bringing deviled eggs to gatherings. The Lord blessed me with this find the very same month. Again, it wasn't a need. I wouldn't have gone to the store to buy one, but it sure was delightful to find.

I have SO much more to post on this topic, but my room mates on this ladies retreat are sleeping, and I do believe my light is keeping them awake...
Can't wait to hear what you all found this weekend.

Gardening together/ Gardening specials

Today, I finally finished the first round of planting in my garden.
I told myself I could not leave for my weekend women's retreat until they were in the ground.
(And yes, my goal for this upcoming weekend is to post my yard sale and Frugal Fashionista finds...from the beach. :)
The reason I added the extra stress of planting when I really needed to prepare for the retreat? Because this overhaul of our garden was done two weeks ago, and those little plants have been waiting patiently on my picnic table ever since.
I have a great gardening post coming up...and as you can see, one that incorporates the whole family. They can be such wonderful helpers, and distractors. :)

I thought I would pass along this great opportunity that Home Depot is providing for women. I think the sign ups for this one will go quickly. If you're not sure of your availability, I would save your spot.
The phrase that got me? "Any sized budget."
Home Depot Do It Herself Workshop

One thing I do invest in on our tight budget are perennials. They are a "forever" investment.
There is nothing I love more than seeing those buds pop out of the ground right around this time of the year. I have been adorning my table with Daffodils and Tulips for weeks. Two of the companies that I have ordered from in the last few years, I am highlighting for you. I couldn't believe when I saw that Gurney's was offering $20 off of a $40 order because I just received my catalog and that wasn't an option. I was thrilled to pass on this savings to you.
Since I partnered with them, I want to make sure that you know I will receive a few pennies on the dollars that you spend.
I have also ordered from Michigan Bulb. I think they are both excellent choices, and you can order in quantity for a better value.
Our raspberry bushes were actually mail order and they are finally taking off this year.
I have been nothing but happy with their customer service, and return policies.
Click the buttons below to browse the deals. I can't wait to get my order finalized for Gurney. :)
I got that catalog in the mail and am happy I didn't go ahead and order before I saw this.

Yard sale + $0.75 + spray paint = MAGIC

It started with a pocketful of change, a wee early morning hour on Saturday, and vision...

$.50 glass/brass tea tray, and $.25 Hutschenreuther Gelb
(made in Bavaria Germany) china sugar set from two different yard sales.

Spray paint given to me by yard "seller."
Adorning this tray, I could feel the vision taking form...
It was clear in my mind, but it didn't transfer correctly to the green bottle.
But never fear, I had the necessary old faithful on hand to remedy this malady.
60 seconds later...

and life was good again...
vision complete.

Ahhh...
are there any sweeter moments on a Saturday morning than yard sales, spray paint and coffee?
Hmm....

Melt in Your Mouth Apple Coffee Cake - Tasty Tuesday

Welcome to Tasty Tuesday Parade of Foods.
I can't wait to show you my recipe, but I need your help.
Over the dinner table, the task at hand has been trying to determine a name for this recipe, and I am stuck. I'm soliciting suggestions. We've come up with Apple Adoration, Pecan Apple Delight, Apple Upside Down cake, Better than Cinnabon rolls, Easiest Ever Apple Pecan coffee cake, and Jenny in Tx said "sweet and nutty treat."

Regardless of the name,YOU WILL WANT TO MAKE THIS!
I have made this for hundreds of people and every time, the recipe requests come.
I can't believe I am sharing this tried and true secret because it's one of those recipes that tastes like you spent hours in the kitchen, yet you can really whip it up at a moment's notice.

Not only will it make you drool, but it's easy and INEXPENSIVE (if you do it right).
This is one of those recipes that you can't goof up no matter how hard you try. It's also one of those recipes that if you forget the actual recipe, you can improvise. Since many of my friends can't stand when I do that, I will be specific.
How's this for specific? Ha Ha...please tell me I am not the only one who scribbled down chicken scratch over a decade ago, improvised for years, and then couldn't believe when I actually found it....
In this...I know...stay tuned for my newly improved recipe planning.

Below is why we can not go wrong with this recipe...ever. We are going to start by layering pure heaven.
I used a round 11 inch stonewear pan, and layered the bottom with:
1. 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
2. 1/4 cup light corn syrup
3. 1/2 cup - brown sugar
4. 1/2 cup - chopped pecans (if you are pecan lovers...I recommend a bit more :)

The pecans are definitely optional. I LOVE them, but this would be delicious even without them.

Brown sugar storage tip:
This was a tip that I didn't learn until I had been married for many years, so hopefully it will be useful.
How can I be at the bottom of a 7 pound Sam's Club bag of brown sugar and still have it be nice and soft?
Put a piece of bread in the top of your bag or container and the brown sugar will not solidify. The bread absorbs any moisture keeping it baking day perfect. I replace the piece of bread as needed.

Back to the recipe...
5. After you have sprinkled the pecans, put a layer of diced, sliced or chopped apples (use what you have, but Granny Smith are the best).
I have an apple, peeler, slicer, corer gadget, so I normally just use half moon slices. Since I didn't want anyone to feel left out, I showed you all options. :)
6. Next, divide biscuits into smaller pieces, and roll them in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. I used Pillsbury Grands (16 oz. can), but if you have homemade biscuit dough in the freezer, this would be the best of yum and health.
In my opinion, the cinnamon/sugar is purely optional. If you are short on time or want to cut out the additional sugar, skip this step.
Since it's my daughter's favorite thing, this was not an option. :)
7. I sprinkled the remaining cinnamon/sugar mixture on top (optional).
8. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.
9. In order to flip this properly, you need to let this cool.
If it does not cool, it will still taste delicious, but it will not be presentational...just soupy sensational.
Can you tell I know this from experience? :)
When it has cooled slightly, pick out your serving plate and place it on top of your baking pan. This step is always a bit tricky, since you must flip it fast.
My son got one in action...hee hee

AHHH....pure delight I tell you, and easy enough that my nine year old daughter can make it. This is a great recipe for your "cooking with kids" days.
I have doubled this recipe and made it in a 9/13. Then I just flip it onto a cookie sheet.
I have also made this "low fat" by using low fat biscuits and cutting down on the butter.
You did know that brown sugar and corn syrup have virtually 0 fat grams?
Now, just don't ask about all the other nutritional benefits...it's just pure pleasure eating. hee hee
And my son just looked over his shoulder and said, "It looks better in real life." Awww...

Do you want to know why this recipe ended up being such a frugal delight?
Here are a few grocery shopping tips that I follow.
Pillsbury biscuits were stockpiled when on sale BOGO, and I had coupons for all items. I never pay more than $.50 for any Pillsbury items, and you shouldn't have to either. There are always coupons for Pillsbury. I bought over 20 items and averaged $.25 a piece.
Corn syrup was $.18 for this whole bottle. I bought the 4 marked downs bottles that were left and will be making this recipe quite a few times in the future.
Apples were marked down because of that teeny tiny bruise there...see it? Yep, I'll take $.49/lb and cut that baby out.
So, enjoy the melt in your mouth apple coffee cake, pecan apple delight, better than Cinnabons or whatever great name you give me.

Can't wait to see what you have to share for Tasty Tuesday's Parade of Foods.
As always, please mention Tasty Tuesday or Balancing Beauty and Bedlam somewhere in your post with a direct link back here.
Also, make sure you link down below directly to your food post so people can find it with ease. We had many links that went to the general blog URL, and when people search for a recipe at a later date, they are not able to find it.
Thanks so much. You all are amazing!!
So what did you make this week?
